I don't play games anymore

I don’t play games anymore, not have for years. The last game I played was ‘Mabinogi’, an MMO.

Yet, I still want to make games, just not play them.

I think that’s fine. But you should know why are you making games if you don’t like playing them. If you enjoy solving technical problems and make cool art and tell interesting stories its fine. But if you do not enjoy playing games do you think you can judge if the gameplay you are making is fun?
Some people try to use games as a platform to make statements and while thats fine, its often not something players enjoy.

You should ask yourself why you don’t want to play Action RPGs yourself if you want to create one. Is there something that you’re missing in them and want to add it? If not, why add another game to the pile?

In any case, playing other ARPGs might help you understand why some things work in them like they do, and why you shouldn’t change them (or only with a lot of communication).

The games take up too much time. I have too many things needing done. One of those is work.

I find it boring playing games now. I lose interest quickly. One problem with this, is I like MMO better, because there is other people there. But a problem with playing the MMO, is 90% of them are kids. But even it was not true, it would take too much time with them.

My main goal is to make my own free to play none profit MMO. I have made attempts at it before, and I now know the biggest problem I had with it, was the method of production was too slow. It would be different in future if I do it again.

That is the project I am currently working on, but it’s a single player ARPG.

I would rather be making games then playing them. I think it’s more fun. I have made lots of projects and played them. Sorry nothing to show, they have all been erased.

I was thinking about that recently. Almost all movies and zitcoms do it this way. Also the cartoons such as from disney land do this. This is what everyone is doing in their movies, cartoons and shows. It’s no different in AAA games, they are doing it too.

The first thing I thought was maybe the game that OP truly wants to play just doesn’t exist yet.

Like others in this thread, playing games has become a much less of due to things that needs to get done elsewhere and also to give attention to the people that matter in life. I don’t play games on the workstation anymore since it is a bit isolating. However I found that having a Steam Deck is an awesome solution. From anywhere in the apartment I can push the power button and resume from last session, play for 10 minutes, then go back to real life stuff. Over the past few months, I’ve been able to put in 11 hours into Ion Fury and having a blast.

So yeah, if you are having issues with time delegation, seems to me the trick is to get a device that allows you to play sporadically here and there, and over time you get quite a bit of playtime in.

I think playing some games once in a awhile is still important. There are a lot more interesting games and mechanics today than there was 20 years ago and seeing them is probably helps with being able to come up with small and cool new games.

I would say that playing games and understanding what makes a good game would make your project stand out. And you don’t even need to understand or even know how to play, you just need to know what makes for a good player experience.

With all that being said, you don’t have to play games to make one, it just helps you understand the game loop, different genres, and more. I would recommend playing games that match your idea or style of game, and then see what you could do better.

Generally I like matching my game to popular franchises so I can market them like that, but not knowing about games can help as well. It makes your game truly unique because you haven’t had the chance to pull from another game’s mechanic.

My conclusion is that there are lots of ways you can go about making a game, it’s just the pros of having a general idea of the gaming market and being a player outweighs the pros of not having experience in my opinion. You can very honestly not do anything about this case, but these are my couple cents.

I have been avoiding games lately. I find more of a desire to learn Godot and mess with game development.

I think that happens to people sometimes. There is more of a desire to create than to observe. It is like how actors will not watch shows.
