Question

Im making a Rogue-Like Boomer Shooter game. Im wondering if anybody would like to provide some ideas? I have most of it planned out, got the concepts, OST, I just have to do a bit of modeling and then development. If anybody would like to suggest ideas that’s great! I’ll take each one into consideration and credit you if I end up using your idea!

Just reply and I will read the idea.

…I just have to ask…

What, in this case, is a Boomer and why do they need to get shot?

(I build plugins for fun and am not a prolific gamer which may explain my lack of understanding)

“Boomer Shooter” is a genre of games inspired by classic FPS games from the 90s like Doom, Quake, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, etc.

Sorry, but “Boomer Shooters” are precisely what Amarc described.
Ultrakill is one of them, Warhammer 40k Boltgun is another, or Starship Troopers Ultimate Bug War.
Quite simple, but really dynamic and fun.
Don’t like the name though, I would call them “Old School FPS”. ^^

On the second thought, the literal interpretation of the term, where you need to shoot boomers, sounds quite satisfying. Especially if the boomers are part of a hive mind controlled by a Shodan-like artificial intelligence entity.

I know just giving an example

is it really a boomshoot if its a roguelike?

Are procedural maps and perma-death enough to satisfy roguelike prerequisites?

Nothing except for Rogue will ever universally be accepted as being really a Rogue-like.

And probably not even that one.

The idea sounds interesting. Each time you play, you don’t know the layout, enemy, and pickup placements. That would be a very different kind of replayability than Doom or Quake.

Could be of some interest to people who like exploring new maps. But in that case I am not sure if a speedy shooter is a good form of gameplay for that. And exploration is less interesting when it’s randomized maps. Though the Bloodborne chalice dungeons do have some fans.

Maybe, Its at least gonna have the movement of one

Idk. It has the fast paced movement of a boomer shooter, it has the randomized rooms & upgrades of a rogue-like. It takes some of each.

I saw not a lot of games that do perks with some effect with attack instead of upgrades, it could work well, e.g sword can have fire perk in which it deals fire damage and all items can have these random perks, it would make gameplay more diverse and fun

I think the best idea I can come up with right now is there are so many rogue likes and so many of them are shooters or bullet hells that out of all the ones I have played my real complaint about all of these is that they either have an endless mode or they dont have one and the levels dont last for very long at all. So if your going to have an endless mode great, and if not play around with how long you want people to spend playing the game during “the game play loop” section of your rogue like.

Yeah. I’m planning to have the players spend like 2 ish minutes on each normal floor and around 4 on the bosses. Maybe around 6 minutes on the final boss. So adding that up that’s around 50 minutes spent on one 100% run.
