I have been practicing pixel art for a while and decided to try and make something for my game. I just want people’s opinions on the art and what could still be better. As you can see I kinda skimped out on the hands and one of the legs but it still looks cool imo so that much is fine.
My game is heavily inspired by the souls games mainly dark souls and Bloodborne so it’s intended.
But I could maybe still brighten it a bit. The darkness helps mask the imperfections lol
With imperfections I more mean the fact that the colours are a bit random. They aren’t thought out well and that’s just made more apparent with brighter lighting. But thanks for the link, will give it a watch.
Lol. Still you in blender cmanalso be helpful
The only feedback I have is to make the left foot stand out more. It looks like a amputee stump.
Maybe have toes of the shoes pointing to the left or right like the other foot.
That’s about all I can decipher, as I’m not an artist. This looks pretty great regardless.
Yeah I remember (I made this a while ago) that I played around with it for a while and this was the best way for it to look good. But also it’s easy to miss obvious stuff so maybe I should try again
You could also make the left shoe stand out more with a brighter shade of brown or thicker toes.
(I’m talking about feet WAY too much right now. I sound like a weirdo)
Stuff to work on is always appreciated. Even if it’s feet.
Thanks. That’s super helpful.
Bit dark as others have said, but thats pretty damn good, now you just need to animate it! ![]()
Oh god no. I’m dreading it already.
If the character is meant to be in a dark environment, don’t draw it on a pure white background. That’s why it’s looking “too dark”. Use some mockup background that’s close to the actual ambience you’re planning to put them in.
Otherwise, I think it looks good.
This is genuinely really good advice.
Size also needs to be a consideration.
The example we see is 640x640. That is rather large and if you are scaling it down for the actual game the whole thing will become even darker.
To me–a guy that grew up with Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, it looks really good, i know it isnt that applicable in modern days, but maybe you could try limiting the amount of colors used in the sprite, it makes it easier to edit or recolor and makes the random splotching issue neutralized; I honestly dont have much to judge because its better than any of the sprites i have done so far.
Also, just giving advice based off of the sprite-sheets used in Dragon Quest IV/V/VI (for DS),
Animating it would be a lot easier if you were to split each body part into a separate component, and used code to control the animations or use it as an advantage for brute-force animating the whole sprite.
This goes with the color-limiting that i mentioned also, but at this point i probably legitimately sound like a very big SNES nerd.
(wow ig i am posting an hour later, dang im too tired to be posting *yawns)
My point was, when working on a sprite or showcasing it, use the background similar to what it will appear against in the game, i.e. put it into intended visual context. Otherwise it’s hard to judge if the sprite is visually functional, whether that function is to pop off the background or blend into it.
The background is only pure white because the way I got it from my pc to my phone caused the background to become pure white. It isn’t actually pure white.
Note :Looking back I’m stupid and get what you mean now lol. Yeah I need the game background for sure. It just… doesn’t exist yet.
Yeah for the forum I uploaded it 640x640 cause I wasn’t sure wether or not the forum would fully display 64x64 images
To be fair I could redesign the area he is in a bit. It’s a boss in my game so It is worth redesigning an area a bit. Lava or so in the background could make it kinda pop out. But that’s just an example of the top of my head.
Although I could also work with my original idea of an area called the abyss which would be super dark but making a character harder to see can be used to my advantage for immersion etc.
You can never do that.
