so my boyfriend lost chapter he worked 6 hours on, is there a way to retrieve it? :[

No, probably not. It happens to us all at some point. Tell him to chalk it up to a lesson learned. Save your work, back you work up, use version control, don’t work for 6 hours on something without making copies somewhere.
It’s a PITA, but when something like this happens, you will be glad you did.
