Should I use blockbench for 3D games?

Godot Version

Godot 4.6

I’m learning Godot game development again after a while of procrastination and putting it off and I’m wondering if Blockbench is a good choice for 3D games. Should I keep using it or should I try and learn Blender instead?

Edit: I also feel I should mention I’m using a MacBook, so my only controls are keyboard and trackpad

I was in the same boat. And take my input with a grain of salt. I’m still at the very start of my learning journey as well. But in my experience, I found Blender overwhelming. I am learning Godot, GDscript and a bunch of other things. I followed a few tutorials but Blender goes deep. I didn’t need another thing to focus intently on.

I found more success focusing on Blockbench which is much simpler (and limited) with the thought: “If I can learn this as intro to 3D modelling, blender will be easier down the line”. Because in the end, I do want to learn Blender. It’s much more powerful and transfers to other industries/tools better if there’d ever be a need.

I used blockbench for a good long time, i got good at it, and I will say that I have had so many struggles with it’s glitches and whatnot that, unless you are trying to make a game like Minecraft, Cubecreator, (for the 3ds, if you dont know, its basically a crummy minecraft clone with bears.)
I dont recommend it at all, Blender is more powerful and its better later on, * i am not a hater for blockbench, but lets just say theres some glitches that forced me to install recovery software to get my lost data back, seriously save yourself the pain unless you want to make minecraft mods
—Whether my advice means something or not to you is your choice, and that i respect.

thanks for the info! my idea is making kinda low poly games (kinda like Mario 64, skull mug on YouTube if youve seen him)

Nice, aye< blockbench is fine for that kind of thing i suppose, but i would still say that blender is a better option (in my oppinion, may be different per each individual), good luck modelling by the way :slightly_smiling_face:

thanks! I might learn it depending on how much of a roadblock it becomes

It’s a bit old, but in case you want to have a look different options, click “(GFS Coverage)” to watch the video he made about those apps:

And in case you want to go with Blender I can recommend https://www.youtube.com/@grabbitt. He has a lot of beginner tutorials and imho explains things beginner friendly. And videos about low poly modeling should be there too.
