I’m realativley new to game programming. I started to build a Multi Player Online Shooter game and run in some trouble to find a method to bind different weapon models to the different player models. I would love to get advice to a good approach, best a method to automate the process.
Good that you disclosed it. Your final snippet won’t compile in a gdscript interpretor (nor in python or any other language for that matter) due to the 19th century literature style quotes.
Fun fact: excessive use of long dashes by LLM’s is probably also due to a disproportional amount of copyrights free digitized books made available by heritage institutions like National Libraries.
I do have one question, though: if the questioner wanted a ChatGPT answer, they might’ve asked it there in the first place… So is this really helpful?
I will remain silent from this point forward, because I don’t have time/energy to act like a corrector of LLM mistakes.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with showing people that they can often find the answers they are looking for simply by asking an LLM, or even by Googling, and doing so without breaking their hearts.
So many rude people broke mine when I was trying to learn modeling, rigging, animation, baking, C, black-boarding, simulating, compositing, and more, sometimes not even by being rude directly, but simply by refusing to reply. So instead, when I can, when I am in the mood, when I am trying to discover a community, and when I have the energy, I try to show the way, which may not be the ideal by the way.
I must also admit that open source has probably contributed a lot to LLM training. GIMP, Blender, Godot, LibreOffice, and countless other open-source projects have shaped the knowledge these models draw from. I tried Claude, Codex, and Gemini, and they can generate surprisingly flawless, running versions of Photoshop in TypeScript or C++. That alone shows how much accumulated human effort is reflected in these systems.
So yes, I understand the dilemma, - even the hypocrisy - you are pointing out: these models are trained on other people’s efforts, including the work of communities that often received very little in return. Whether we use them or not, they will keep improving. Will we cheat and use calculators to do our math? It is just a moral decision we may have to face.
I appreciate your nuanced contribution, but there simply is a lot of evidence piling up against this argument. And the climate impact.
I am sorry, @why-not, to risk starting a discussion about gen-AI here again, so, @ergin3d, if you want to talk about that subject more, please follow up on one of the topics dedicated to that:
If you are using 3D models with skeletons you can use a BoneAttachement3D to help align with any skeletal animations. If you don’t have any animations or are in 2D, use markers with an offset and childing the weapon to those markers is a good start.
or sure, I’m human and the content was generated by me. But I’m into programming games since 4 days… Thanks for the tipps. AI solved the problem with your help…Cheers.
