Tilemaplayer act as one layer in the ancient tilemap node. You need two tilemaplayer, one for the background and one for your grass.

Okay, I think I solved the mysterious gray background now.
I did two separate tilemaplayers; one for the sky and another for the grass. Both have tilemap 0 cause I “started over” by making a new tilemaplayer. Before I must have made another terrainset in the same tilemaplayer, hence the override the tiles did before.
