Will pixel art work in a Don't Starve Together like 3d environment?

Do you think simple Pixel Art will work in a Don’t Starve Together style or will it look bad? Like if the camera will be like in Don’t Starve and the sprites are rotated to the camera, will it look good? (couldn’t find the right tags that would fit this). That’s a genuine question to see if graphics that i’m planning to add to my game will be likable for people, and by simple pixel art i mean like 32x32 sprites with not a lot of color variety

Hi,

The style you’re talking about is called “2.5D”, and it can definitely look good. You should have a look at games such as Octopath Traveler and Songs of Conquest, that are both using 2.5D pixel art, and although their pixel art resolution is greater than the 32x32 you mentionned, I believe they’re both proof that this artstyle can lead to amazing looking games!

Keep in mind that, for such a game to look good, it will mostly depend on how good are the sprites themselves. You may have an amazing 2.5D technology, lot of post processing effects, stuff like that, but if the textures are not good looking, then something will feel wrong.

Also, if you’re wondering whether an artstyle would look good or not, keep in mind that you can do some testing before working on gameplay! Setup a scene with some characters, environments, maybe a camera that can move/zoom like in Don’t Starve so that you can have a closer look at your world, but a scene with no actual gameplay, just here for the sake of ensuring the game looks nice.
There’s a thing called “beautiful corner” in game dev, that consists in a small portion of your game that looks like the final game version should look, and that also acts as a testing scene for the art team. So, yeah, artstyle can be tested/iterated on exactly as everything in a game development process.
