Godot Version
GODOT 4
Question
Hi everyone!
I picked up Godot 4 for the very first time roughly 9 weeks ago to build a 3D local couch co-op survival RPG from scratch. I’ve been documenting the raw development journey for 43 consecutive days, and the underlying systems architecture is now stable and functional running natively on a standard laptop tray. Total time spent building this to date is 65 days!
I wanted to handle all the core mechanics from the ground up without relying on pre-made templates. Here is the structural breakdown of what is currently compiling and functional inside the project:
* **Dynamic Multi-Viewport Input Routing:** To prevent control bleeding across split-screen partitions, inputs are cleanly isolated by routing gamepads through _unhandled_input() device filtering checks, with independent character bodies nested inside isolated SubViewport nodes.
* **Virtual Focus Override:** To bypass the engine’s default single-player window focus limits (where opening a menu on Player 2 steals the active cursor ring from Player 1), I set all button Focus Modes to None. Navigation is handled entirely through custom unhandled input index arrays (active_index), manually toggling flat colored style outline borders so both players can navigate inventory slots side-by-side simultaneously.
* **Asynchronous Profile Serialization:** Player inventories (backed by custom .tres resource files) are completely decoupled from the master world environment save states, ensuring drop-in/drop-out solo or cooperative play without data bleeding or profile corruption during scene changes.
* **Processing & Core Systems:** Features a synchronized calendar tracker with active sleep penalties, 360-degree free raycast placement logic for custom assets (like beds and storage chests), and cross-wired item databases that let campfire and stone smelter nodes dynamically process harvested crops or copper ore.
**Visual Progress & Dev Log:**

The user interface layout boxes are still a massive, unaligned placeholder mess and the 3D art style is just simple shape blocks for now, but forcing these local multiplayer data structures to cooperate was my main priority!
