I prefer 2D for a fighter like this, but I donā€™t think itā€™s too important either way.

This is correct, sadly. The game might be taken off its platform, but as long as no money is involved, that would probably be the extent of it.

Iā€™ll make sure thatā€™s not the case. Sure, material may be involved, but thatā€™d be the full extent of it. Voicelines, sprites, mechanics and everything in-between would be hand-made by me to not risk using official material that could get the game removed.

Besides, I could very much make changes. Thatā€™s not off the picture. If it meant keeping the game alive and running, Iā€™d most likely, change any characters, IPā€™s or maps to make sure everything else stays intact.

Iā€™d like to add the Green Ranger inā€¦ and uuummm u can easily refashion him to Green Rooster as I used to call him on Power Rangers Shattered Grid.

P.S U should make parodies of the characters with different colour schemes where it is not exactly them, but anyone with a brain could tellā€¦yeah thatā€™s superman.

I would recommend, even for a free game, to steer away from any IP that is not yours and that you donā€™t have explicit, in writing, licensing usage for.

You can still be DMCAed, even if you didnā€™t copy anything, itā€™s still an Intellectual Property infringment. Fair use probably doesnā€™t cover it.

You could do like some racing games did to avoid costly and expiring license deals (try to find Forza Horizon 4 and earlier to buy, except a 2nd hand DVD) and just use humorous adjacent names for your heroes, and a bit like with the cars, skip one or two elements crucial to the visual identity.

For a free project (no donation buttons) that should make it fine.

Edit : not a lawyer, just my thoughts based on my personal experience with the topic of using commercial IP in games without explicit licensing. TLDR : donā€™t do it, or be smart about it
