"The Embers Below" : A coop survival game about descending into an alien ecosystem!

Follow your heart. I’m serious.

Did you know that, before Monkanics, I had a few other concepts with different names. But they were all PvP third-person shooters centered around building wacky weapons.

The first concept I had was called “The Working Class”. It was about a bunch of people weaponizing workforce items. It was a hero shooter.

The next one was “Legends of the Loadout”. It had the same theme, but a slightly better name. It morphed into a class-based shooter.

Then there was “Loadout for Lindependence”, which was a riff on “Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville”. (I used to live and breathe that game). It morphed into an arcade shooter.

The lastly, after I refined my ideas and characters, it become “Monchanics”. When it became a full arena shooter.

Lastly, I refined the name again to be easier to read with the monkey pun. Which created “Monkanics”. Which is the perfect name.

Point is, your game’s name will evolve with you. This is actually the first time I’ve shared these in public.

Yeah. I’ve been thinking just my game is in a weird spot. Cause the name has to fit a specific kind of spot. Most naming conventions I usually use don’t really work.

Well, what’s the first word that pops into your head when you think of your game?

Hmmmm. Dungeon ig. I went through the same thought process already but as soon as you make a name with anything related to the word dungeon it’s hard not to make it corny

Since your game is hardcore co-ip, look at some other co-op games for inspiration. Like GTFO, Lethal Company, Peak, REPO, etc.

Also, I got this super condescending message while typing this. Godot Forum’s gonna Godot Forum.

And Godot Forum DMs have a 500 message limit for some reason. This is why I use Discord.

Oof Godot forum is gonna be Godot forum indeed. Yeah I have been looking at those coop games but TBF my game is a very different vibe so I’m not sure if it fits using similar names. I have been thinking of having the game have a pretty cozy vibe and so taking inspiration from one of my favourite games outer wilds naming style and had a few ideas connected to the name idea of basically a fireplace in the deep. But I’m still thinking. Maybe like deep hearth or the embers below or smthn.

Just throw something out there. Say literally ANY word, and go from there. If it doesn’t fit, just say a new word.

Ok I have decided. The game will be called “The Embers Below”.

Any feedback on the name is obviously appreciated as for now the game name isn’t really set in stone.

It sounds pretty good.

Just make sure to search the name you want to pick on Google to check if there’s any other media with the same name.

It also has to also be a video game, “The Embers Below” book is a thing, but you can still have the game version of “The Embers Below”.

Also, copyright is an automatic right, at least in the US. All you need a proof that you created the concept/Intellectual Property first, which you have already done.

Yeah true didn’t check for other stuff. There’s one fantasy book apparently. But that should be fine.

Every time I look up “Monkanics”, there’s a bunch of other random M-words.

  • “Mannchanics” (Auto shop)
  • “Mochanics” (???)
  • “Mechanical Monkey” (Musician)
  • “Monkany” (???)

There’s a also a Fakemon (Fan-made Pokemon) called Monkanic.

But those search results will be snuffed out eventually.

Sounds like a very original concept! I’ll definitely look forward to seeing where you take this.

I have been considering adding a story to the game.

I know it’s not really your place to be able to know the answer to wether or not I should do this.

But any feedback on if this game should have a story or not?

Hard to say ^^’
But maybe a story with elements here and there, like in Subnautica ou The Forest, would be great.

could take a soulslike approach to storytelling. Drop a load of hints but basically never explicitly say anything

So basically lore instead of story.
