WOMBO! A deckbuilding horde survivor with roguelike elements

Hey guys!
I’ve recently been developing a game that I’m currently calling WOMBO!
(epic logo)

It’s an action roguelike / horde survivor where the main mechanic is that rather than acquiring permanent upgrades over the run, you equip temporary powerups that affect your gun’s stats. Each powerup can only be used ONCE, so it’s important to plan ahead while also considering what you’ll need to use to stay alive.
The powerups only last a short time, but their time can be extended through the other core mechanic: COMBO. Killing enemies in a chain increases your combo, and based on how many powerups you have equipped and how powerful they are, you’ll get time back on all of them. This rewards experimenting and making powerful builds, while weaker ones are quickly brought to an end.
Every 5 waves, you gain one new combo slot, allowing for more powerful combos.
But anyway, I’ll let the game speak for itself:

The itch page is only here for other devs to have a look right now (not polished, just the game files). I’ll polish that up soon.

Controls:
WASD/ Left stick - move
Mouse / Right stick - aim
Click / Right trigger - shoot
Q / Top button (Y on xbox) - discard current powerups
Ctrl / Press right stick - Toggle auto aim

I recommend some screenshots and a description on your page if you want people to look at it. Interesting idea for game mechanics.

Sorry mate, i forgot all about those bits!
I was just putting up the game page for fellow devs at this point, so I hadn’t got those done yet.
I’ll do my polishing and other bits once I feel ready to release.
I’m barely a month in right now, so that’ll be quite a while.
Let me get some screenshots in here so there’s at least something.

You do you. Keep in mind that even fellow devs have to decide how to spend their time, and most games posted in this forum don’t get a lot of responses. Creating screenshots and a description, even if you change them later, will make even devs more interested in checking your game out, and you can get feedback on that too.

Of course, that makes a lot of sense. I’m often round these forums and just look at screenshots so i can imagine how someone else might do the same. I’ve got one in, but i’ll play through a run and get a better, more interesting one - be right back.
EDIT: I’ve got some pretty nice ones - at least, considering the game is still a WIP.

The game looks disgustingly sick!!!
The art style is awesome!

Agree with @Frozen_Fried and wanted to add that the logo is excellent!

Your design challenge I think is going to be to make all this artwork combine well to not overload the player with confusing multiple eye candy. Hopefully you can pull it off.

Great work so far.

Thanks guys!
Great to hear that my art looks nice. I’m a mediocre artist but i think having a good reference did wonders for my art - i’ve been inspired by an animated series i watched called “kid vampire”.

Have you two gotten a chance to try any game mechanics @Frozen_Fried , @pauldrewett ?

Not yett ,but I will try!

Okay this is brilliant. The visuals are so clean and the audio is amazing.
Great work so far!

I tried the windows build, not sure if it happens normally, but the camera ricocheting from gun shots sometimes bounces the player off-screen? If you haven’t fixed it yet, you could probably clamp the force so it never exceeds a certain limit.

Other than that, loving this. Looking forward to more

My new update should have camera improvements - just released it! Thanks for the great support!

Hey @lZebl , could you go into more detail or provide a clip of the issue? I didn’t totally understand the problem. If it’s the issue where the camera suddenly zooms away, that’s caused by large amounts of stars being on screen. I’m working on ways to optimize the star pickup since I want to have huge numbers of them on-screen.

Awesome, if you’ve just updated it then it might already be gone. But I can send a clip if you like - it’s when the camera goes back a bit when you shoot. A few times, the camera did that without returning to the player; if that makes sense. In any case I’ll send something so you can have a look

Just got home. It would be great to see a video of the issue.

Sorry to bother you, @lZebl , but without footage of the issue I can’t do much - would you send some?

Updated the game for those interested - there’s been balancing fixes and several new items.

Sorry about that @ComicallyUnfunny , I’ve tried getting the bug again a few times but failed. I’ll try a few more times later today to see if it happens. At any rate, it looks like its super rare it happens

At least it’s rare and not too impactful. There are a few more camera bugs to fix today, then i’ll roll out another update. Are you enjoying the new build? Any suggestions?

Enjoying it enough to be distracted from working on my own :joy:
The new build is looking tight.

My only suggestion at the moment would be some sort of visual feedback when you’re picking something with X/A/B. Maybe a slight delay combined with flashing the selected powerup.

Animations are planned, but since i’m a programmer, not an animator, i’m sort of slow. I’ll get that done in the next update.
