Celestial Show - A 3D Space Simulation Game

Hey everyone! :waving_hand:
I’ve been working on my space simulation game for a few months, based on my own & current knowledge of Astrophysics. :ringed_planet:

If i want to describe it in one sentence (Without Details):

  • The game is about gaining mass to grow & become another celestial body based on your body’s current state.

Celestial Show’s current features (pre-release v0.1):

  • Real-Time Gravity
  • Basic Player Movement
  • Basic Velocity System
    • Orbiting Around Other Bodies
  • Basic Camera for the Player’s Body
  • Move Sense (Screen Shake based on your current Movement Velocity)
  • Black Color Background for Space
  • Zoom In & Out
  • Initial Mass System
  • Initial Body Type Concepts
  • Initial Gas (like nebulas) Ecosystem Such as Density

The video shows overview of current (basic) Movement, inside of Volumetric Nebula & Zoom feature. Some features need UI/UX to be shown in the video such as Mass (Exchange) System.

This video shows your player’s body orbiting around another celestial body with adjusting your current velocity & distance from orbited body.

I’ll post updates here whenever i had some progress.

Hope you have Spacey Nights! :milky_way: :comet:

It’s a fun idea, I mean who doesn’t like planetary accretion? Nice look too, although some stars wouldn’t go amiss.

What’s the player’s role? In other words, what does the player do in the game, to gain mass?

Thank You so much for your comment & feedback!! :slightly_smiling_face:

In this game, Gas is foundation of everything. You born as a celestial body and trying to gain mass with different methods such as going face to face with other bodies like rocky planets, dwarf planets or gas giants and etc… this may be a risky method for your celestial body to grow.
There are also different methods like going through nebulas to gain mass which this is a less risky method.
All of these can lead you to growth or even transition from current body to another body such as star. :star:
About the stars, in the images, y’all can’t see any star because there isn’t any stars in the scene. I want real stars, this is why i don’t use a skybox full of stars. So this way, y’all can explore the space.

I know the game is about gathering mass, and roughly how gravity works in our universe… I’m still not clear on what the player actually does in the game

Can the player control the movement of their astral body, or the forces around it, or something else? Is the challenge in precise movement, careful planning, or..?

Thank you again for your comments. I appreciate you so much! :slightly_smiling_face:

Players can control their celestial body with W-A-S-D keys and also can go Up & Down with arrow keys and have ability to change their move direction with their mouse & a key at same time.
:ringed_planet:
Your celestial body has a velocity system that velocity can be changed with specific keys from 0 to max (based on your body’s current states, max velocity can be varied). So players can handle situations like for example when you captured by a gas giant with your little asteroid, whether you decide to escape from gas giant(which it’s difficult doing this with a lower mass body), have a circular orbit around it or etc.. you can do these with adjusting & limiting your velocity with this system and move & control your body
:milky_way:
Forces cannot directly applied around your body. Your celestial body automatically applies force to all other bodies across the space and other bodies do this too, based on their mass. Because gravity related to masses and force related to gravity & distance between bodies. So you can increase your force with gathering mass.
:star:
I can’t say one specific goal for the player (maybe it’s in early stage), because i think there are more. Examples: Exploring the space, Grow to capture so many bodies, Become a moon of a rocky planet, Break a solar system, Going face to face with a star and etc. Player can do these with different ways.

I like the idea of a ‘move set’ for an astral body, like giving yourself just enough momentum to stay in orbit around a larger body, maybe just low enough to steal away some atmosphere, etc… come to think of it, sling-shotting from orbit would be fun too, but maybe tricky to make good controls for.

I’m certainly looking forward to trying the game

Pre-Release v0.1.1:

  • godot 4.6 to godot 4.7 (minor)
  • separated gas volumes from other bodies (minor)
  • improved gravity forces between gas & other bodies (minor)
  • random initial particle amounts for gas volumes (minor)
  • initial dynamic temperature system for gas volumes (major)
  • inward & outward pressure for gas volumes (major)
  • initial gas volume size (major)
  • applied inward & outward pressure in gas volumes (major)
  • runtime remove gas volumes with near zero densities from space (minor)

Here’s a video that shows merging & interacting between two gas volumes in the Game:

Hope y’all always CREATIVE! :star: :ringed_planet:

I’ve just paused the project to continue working on Frontward. So i can just focus on that one project.
Frontward is closer to release than Celestial Show.
