Should I use portraits for my game or not?

OK, as all who knows know, I have created 2 character portraits for my game, based off of my original official “art” (if you mean my crummy sketches… and initial sprite designs)

I dont have it implemented currently, but i thought it MAY be a nice idea to include character portraits to my game for say online play, menu, in general that look different based off of the hairstyle/color, skin color and ig i could do an eyecolor if i not lazy. I started a blank sprite in a manga style with 4 basic skin shade colors and am wondering if i should even put the effort to doing portraits.

Does anyone really care about character portraits? I mean, they were in Final Fantasy IV for the SFC and Chrono Trigger, so i think it could be cool…

Since i already started work on my sprite, i might as well post free asset CCO licensed of course mostly because i am feeling nice.

Thanks in advance (hopefully get respond  to question)
(Very glad i am good at pixel art, actually looks pretty good under 48 by 48 res)

Well, you could post the icons so we can decide. You just posted images of them in another topic as well:

Having character portraits is only to represent the player/user/entity, and it up to developer preference. A name at minimum is required.

As for the icons themselves, just make the mouths bigger or redesign them. The black line looks really uncanny. That’s my only complaint though, these look fine otherwise.

ahh, OK, will edit now then, thank you very much for your feedback

I have to agree with the black line. I thought that they are the nostrils or shadow below the nose, without a mouth. Now I can only see it as the mouth. and for that they sit a little bit too high. Huge chins.

OK, sorry, had to take caffiene.

anyways, i edited the sprites but i just diddnt edit the original pictures.
Sorry about that. ごめん
I would move the mouthes down, but its kinda hard to given my art-style…
The color was certainly offput, but its a whole other issue with the chin thing. . . .

I like character icons, especially if you have a few different like when they are mad, or things like that. Makes it more interesting.

Ahh, this i could achieve by making the eyes and mouth a separate component as well-
that way i could easily do different expressions—I may have to do it then, thank you very much for your feedback!
(*OK sorry, the explanation may have been unnecessary, i will basically strategize anything i can)
Somehow i actually enjoy more work…

I’d say your decision depends on your game - if characterization is important, it’s good to have customizability, so the player can invest themselves in the character. If not, I’d say it’s better to spend your time honing a single design to be exactly the character / look that will suit the game.

Of course, it’s also worth thinking about whether it’s the best use of your time in terms of making your game better

Cool

For an old-timer like me, it looks very NES like and nostalgic. Is there more I / we can see somewhere? In any case, I’m looking forward to it

Ahh, of course! I have 2 other posts related to Omnislate, I recently edited some of the sprites, so the pics currently posted arent AS great, but since i stick to Super NES color amounts it should be a good reference.

Portraits are great to show character emotions better. A game that makes good use of them is Broforce .
